Syntex Nonwoven drainage and separation fabric is a polypropylene (PP) geotextile are made from needle punched polypropylene staple fibre. These fibers are cut, opened, laid onto a web, needled, inspected, tested and rolled.

Applications

  • Gabion: Geotextile is used to prevent spoil from entering the gabion structure. This this application a light weight 145gsm fabric is preferred.
  • Civil: Roadway Stabilisation/ Separation: Roads and highways are built using geotextile to prevent aggregate from mixing with the subgrade.
  • Drainage: Syntex nonwoven geotextiles are ideal for drainage applications. Unlike woven geotextiles (with the exception of monofilament drainage fabrics), polypropylene nonwovens resist clogging. Nonwovens are placed in direct contact with the earth where drainage stone, perforated drain coil, etc may be placed. The nonwoven filters soil and waste while allowing water and leachate to pass.
  • Environmental: Geomembrane Protection: Syntex heavy weight nonwoven geotextiles will cushion and protect geomembranes from puncture caused by aggregate and basecourse. Gas Venting: Heavy weight nonwoven geotextiles are used for collection and lateral transmission of liquids and gases that may build up under a geomembrane used in a capping of waste facility.
  • Hard Armour Underlay: Syntex nonwoven geotextiles are recommended to help relieve hydrostatic pressure beneath hard armour and prevent soils from migrating to the surface providing an effective erosion control method.

Mudstop Woven Geotextile

Mudstop is a permeable, woven polypropylene geotextile designed for applications where soil stabilisation and separation are major functions and strength is not critical.

When used and installed correctly the fabric may be used as follows:

  • Separation of aggregates in parking, pavements, and roads
  • Low cost temporary or permanent roading for construction vehicles in problem traffic areas
  • Under aggregate to prevent loss of fill into subsoil and allow top cover to remain firm
  • Filter lining for erosion control and stop banks

Installation

1. Site Preparation:
When accessways are to be formed on very poor ground such as peat or marsh, attempt to leave the surface layer of vegetation to assist in load bearing. Where practical, level very deep ruts and clear the area of large stones, trees, etc. When sub-grade has been exposed and levelled, apply fabric immediately to minimise damage to the surface.

2. Laying:
As a Roadway Fabric: Roll out Mudstop fabric from the point of access to the site along the length of the intended accessway. Fasten down the edges with Ground Staples or stones to prevent movement by wind. Overlap the joints by 0.3 to 1.0 metres, as practical for the sub-grade conditions and the nature of the aggregate.

Construction Area, Soil Stabilisation:
Roll out Mudstop fabric. On very soft subgrade, begin placement of fabric on the firmer soil to establish an anchorage. Fasten down edges with Ground Staples or stones to prevent movement by wind. Overlap the joints by 0.3 to 1.0 metres, as practical for the subgrade conditions and the nature of the aggregate.

As a Drainage Filter:
Not recommended for this application, for drains see Syntex.

Aggregate Description:
Single size, compactible, rounded aggregate is recommended. Where sharp or flinty aggregate is used, a blanket of sand over fabric assists in preventing damage. Largest aggregate dimension should not exceed one third of sub-base depth.

Aggregate Depth:
Spread fill evenly across top of fabric to a minimum depth of 100mm. In extremely soft conditions, 300mm of fill may be required to consolidate surface. Without a geotextile raft, at least 500mm of fill may be required for problem areas.

Silt Fence

In order to ensure sedimentation control during construction and to comply with the various acts and regulations it is mandatory to prevent runoff and sediment discharging off site or into the stormwater system.

This is achieved in part by installing silt fence barriers around the perimeter of the earthworks. A silt fence needs to have an adequately high UV resistance for the term required, plus it must meet filtration requirements.

Noweed Weed Control Matting

Noweed weed mat by Permathene is available in two grades including medium (95 g/m2) and heavy (110 g/m2). Our weed mat is a dense weave of 96 x 44 threads per 10cm which means it does not fall apart when cut as some woven weed fabrics will. Also it is woven because nonwoven weed matting has poor resistance to UV (in our experience).

The medium weight is a good weed matting in that it will last for a number of years exposed before it degrades. The heavy, Noweed Premium is superior in terms of effective UV life (exposed). Although there are many factors which can affect longevity, it should last for over 5 years.

Water flow rate is vital to the earth beneath the fabric. Some weed mats are only woven polyethylene/ polypropylene and are not designed for the purpose of flow rate but only to kill weeds. What happens with these mats is that the soil will sour from lack of nutrients. Noweed Premium has a flow rate of 15 litres per m2 per second.
